Letter from the Director
living our mission - Cindy Heaney
On Saturday, February 4th, 71 teachers from 19 area schools will be coming to ITC for our annual teacher’s conference. ITC has been hosting this conference for 13 years---13 years of learning and growth, as a program and as a staff. This year’s theme, “Theory and Practice: The Cycle of Pedagogy in Early Childhood,” has bubbled up from our own exploration of and reflections on keeping relevant theory at the center of our daily lived experiences with children and families.
Why do we host this conference every year? It is certainly a huge undertaking and requires Herculean effort from many staff to pull it off. Why do we do it?
“ITC will be a highly visible leader in the Early Childhood Community and an advocate for responsive care giving.”
The above quote is taken directly from our ITC Mission Statement. The conference is a tangible manifestation of our dedication to the field of Early Childhood Education and our desire to improve childcare--- here at ITC and in the larger community. Sharing our thinking enhances our growth while it expands the possibilities for others.
Our guests will have an opportunity to:
tour our classrooms and see the wildly ingenious ways teachers develop invitations for play, exploration and learning
observe many forms of documentation in the halls and classrooms that reflect our deeply held beliefs around children’s competence and children’s innate value as citizens of the world
attend professional workshops presented by ITC experts who have honed their craft and are ready to share their ideas
mingle and network with each other—there is so much we learn from our conversations with other teachers
be inspired---It is often our experience that teachers leave our conference a head taller than when they arrived
And what is in it for us? We, too, stand a head taller, reminded that we are blessed to be working in a school that values children, families, and teachers; where innovation is celebrated and big ideas are worth wrestling with; and where personal and professional growth is a mandate---an ideal to uphold.
